Speaking & Research

Practice raises the questions. Research helps me go deeper.

My speaking grows out of questions I first encountered as a practitioner — about how organizations create value, build authority, engage stakeholders, use technology responsibly and put purpose into practice.

More than twenty years in communication leadership taught me to look beyond the visible issue to the decisions, relationships and systems shaping the outcome.

Research gives me another way to examine those questions. Speaking is where I bring the thinking back into the room.

Ideas built for the room

Talk 01

What Counts as Value?

Communication is often assessed through a narrow lens: what it costs, what it produces and whether it can be tied directly to revenue.

But value can show up in other ways too. Strong communication can shape reputation, strengthen stakeholder relationships, build trust, support change and influence the conditions in which revenue and organizational performance are created.

This talk asks a broader question: what counts as value, and are we measuring communication too narrowly? Rather than treating communication as something that constantly needs to justify its existence, the session reframes how organizations can think about the value it creates, protects and enables.

Audience leaves with

a broader way to think about communication’s contribution to organizational value and a clearer language for connecting reputation, relationships and trust to business outcomes.

Talk 02

What If Thought Leadership Isn’t Content?

Organizations are producing more thought leadership than ever. That does not necessarily mean they are becoming more influential.

Thought leadership is often managed like a content program: publish more, distribute more, measure engagement and look for attribution. But content is only the visible artifact.

Authority develops through expertise, point of view, executive visibility, market relevance, consistency and accumulated influence over time. This talk examines what changes when we stop treating thought leadership as a publishing problem and start seeing it as a broader system of authority-building.

Audience leaves with

a clearer understanding of how thought leadership creates influence over time and where to look when strong expertise is failing to translate into recognized authority.

Talk 03

The Question AI Can’t Answer for You

AI can generate, summarize, analyze and recommend with extraordinary speed. But it cannot take responsibility for the consequence.

Is the output accurate? Is it appropriate? What is missing? What assumptions are embedded in it? Whose perspective has been excluded? And when should human judgment override the recommendation entirely?

Drawing on my Trust But Verify framework and research into responsible communication in AI-mediated systems, this talk explores the role of human judgment in AI-assisted work. The question is no longer simply whether organizations should use AI. It is where they should trust it, where they must verify it and where responsibility cannot be delegated at all.

Audience leaves with

a practical way to think about human judgment, verification and accountability in AI-assisted decision-making and communication.

Talk 04

How Does Purpose Become Something Stakeholders Can Experience?

Purpose is easy to articulate. It is much harder to operationalize.

Organizations often collapse purpose, sustainability, ESG, CSR and social impact into one conversation, even though they play different roles. Purpose provides the why. Sustainability and ESG help define the what. CSR and social impact initiatives provide some of the how. The broader societal outcome asks so what.

But the most important question is often this: where do stakeholders actually experience any of it? This talk uses a stakeholder lens to explore how purpose moves from organizational intent into decisions, relationships, engagement and practice. It asks not simply whether an organization has a purpose, but whether that purpose meaningfully influences how the organization behaves toward the people affected by what it does.

Audience leaves with

a practical way to distinguish purpose from adjacent concepts and examine whether purpose is genuinely being operationalized through stakeholder relationships and organizational choices.

Research

Research that stays connected to practice

My research is rooted in questions that emerged from practice and continues to inform the way I think about organizations, stakeholders and accountability.

Social Purpose & Stakeholder Engagement

How organizations understand, interpret and operationalize social purpose through their relationships with stakeholders.

Current interests include:

  • social purpose and stakeholder engagement
  • stakeholder theory and organizational accountability
  • customer engagement and sustainability in hospitality

My research explores the role of social purpose in organizational decisions, how different stakeholders experience that purpose and the ways organizations assess whether intent is translating into practice.

Responsible Communication & Governance

How communication can function as a mechanism of organizational accountability in the age of AI-mediated systems.

Current interests include:

  • responsible communication as a meta-governance framework
  • AI-mediated communication systems, trust and governance
  • human judgment and accountability in AI-assisted work

This work asks what happens when communication is increasingly mediated by systems that can generate, recommend and influence at scale, and what responsibilities remain fundamentally human.
